AL WUSTA
Explore Tours
Beyond Sharqiya lies the province of Al Wusta (literally, “The
Central Region”), a great expanse of gravel desert known as the Jiddat al
Harasis which stretches southwest all the way to Dhofar. Economically, the
area is one of Oman’s main oil-producing regions, but few tourists make it
here, unless passing through while tackling the long drive to Salalah, and
even fewer stop. The only mainstream attraction is the Arabian Oryx
Sanctuary, although the long off-road journey down the coast south of
Duqm offers a classic slice of wild Omani at its most unspoiled.
Al Wusta Region consists of four Wilayat (Provinces):
• Duqm
• Mahout
• Al Jazer

BIRD WATCHING AT BARR AL HIKMAN:
Barr Al Hikman in Oman is a vital rest stop for more than half a
million birds, boasting some of the highest shorebird densities of
any intertidal mudflat. The formal protection of this site would
therefore secure a crucial, truly irreplaceable, hub for migratory birds.
In a region dominated by arid landscapes, Barr Al Hikman is a wetland
pearl. An oasis for nature that is intricately connected to its history and
dynamic natural processes. As well as the national and international
significance of the area for birds, turtles, whales and fish, this wetland is of
paramount importance for people. Its function as a fish nursery is vital to
the region. This wetland is so special, and yet so little known, that we feel
its story needs to be shared. In this book we aim to unveil its secrets.
Words alone cannot do it justice, so it is with pictures that we endeavour to
capture the natural beauty and reveal its remarkable.

SUGAR DUNES OF AL KHALUF
White desert, also known as Sugar Dunes or Al Khaluf Dunes is another
natural phenomenon in Oman located near fishing village of Al Khaluf,
400km south of Muscat.
Khaluf sands is one of the most alluring locations in Oman, but also one of
the most challenging for the inexperienced driver.
The big white sand dunes that are found beyond the village of Khaluf are
very soft, and only approachable with a good 4×4.
The dunes are permanently exposed to strong winds from the ocean, and
are constantly moving. This prevents them from hardening and,
consequently, it is much easier to get stuck here than in other places where
sand dunes exist.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
