Bilad Sur Castle

Bilad Sur Castle was built in the 19th century to defend the town against
marauding tribes from the inland. The castle follows a classic four-tower
design, with crenelated, 6 meter high walls. However, where Bilad Sur
Castle distinguishes itself with its unusual two-storey watchtower, which
provides 360 views of the area. Fully restored, the castle now houses a
museum where you can learn more about the history of the town.

SUNAYSILAH CASTLE

SUNAYSILAH FORT is an old Islamic fort located in Sur, Oman. It
is dating back to the 17th Century AD.
Crowning a rocky eminence in the centre of town, this 300-year-old castle
is built on a classic square plan with four round watchtowers. It was the
most important part of the defensive system of Sur, a town that was greatly
fortified to protect its illustrious overseas trade. A few traditional artifacts,
such as pottery, Quran stands and carpets, help bring some of the rooms
to life. You can't miss the castle, as its presence looms over the town
centre.

DHOW FACTORY

Dhow Factory, Sur is one of the most significant as well as historic sites
in Arabia that is famous for building wooden boats. Dhow, in Arabic,
literally translates to ‘boat. Situated to the south of the Khor Al Batah
suspension bridge, this museum is steeped in rich historical
significance. It is also a museum which showcases different sections,
with the dignified Wilayat emblem ‘Al Ghanja Ship’ adorning the entrance. A walk through the great factory can give one a
fascinating opportunity to look into how wooden boats were
made in earlier times.
Displaying Omani ships, along with photographs of sailors, makers of
ships, ports, and of Sur itself, the Maritime Museum also holds a section
for tableware and pottery. Since the museum is not very large, it should
not take more than an hour to explore this beautiful place and immerse
in its rich heritage and history.

Fatah Al Khair ,traditional Omani ship

Fatah Al Khair is the name of a ship which is currently a part of an
open-air museum which is dedicated to the shipbuilding lineage of the
city of Sur in Oman. Built over 70 years ago, the wooden fishing vessel
of Fateh Al Khair has strong historical significance to it. It was brought
back to Yemen, restored and grounded on dry land.
The ship is said to be hand-built without any nails, and hand-woven
ropes were used to shore up. Visitors are not permitted to climb up the
dhow but can get up close to look at the flanks. Fatah Al Khair is located
in Al Qanjah Boat Yard within the Sur Maritime Museum.

Sur Maritime Museum (Al Qanjah Boat Yard)

This open-air museum houses beautifully restored traditional Arabian
trading vessels called dhow. The city is famous for hand-crafting the
wooden ships, and this is a great place to see them up close. Small
placards next to each ship gives its brief history. There is also a display of
traditional ship-building tools and a collection of photographs of Sur in the
early 20th century. It is especially nice to visit just before sunset, as there
are spectacular views across the bay.

AL AYJAH LIGHTHOUSE

Offering panoramic views of Sur, Al Ayjah Lighthouse was built by the
Portuguese and is actually a defence tower turned lighthouse that used to
guide dhows safely into Sur lagoon. The tower is close to the Dhow Yard
and Sur Maritime Museum. Al Ayjah Lighthouse in Oman, also known as
Sur lighthouse is one of the top attractions to visit in the city. Facing the
Gulf of Oman, this attraction offers cultural, historical and natural
experiences. The lighthouse is situated on Ras Ayqah, the highest east
side point in Sur Harbour square. This is an important attraction to visit
when in Sur.

AL AYJAH FORT

The Al Ayjah fort was built along with the merchant houses surrounding
its perimeters. These houses have beautifully carved doors and lotus
pillared porches. The architecture of the fort is plain and well maintained
and has a uniform square structure as most of the other forts in the
region.

AL AYJAH WATCH TOWER

An integral part of the landscape of Ayjah, and visible from the corniche in
Sur, these three small round towers made of sandstone once guided
dhows to safe harbour in Sur's sheltered lagoon. It's possible to drive up to
the base of them to get a closer look, but most interesting is their strategic
location along the edge of the harbour. They form part of the rhythm of the
scenic water view at sunset and are much photographed as a result.

OLD CASTLE MUSEUM

The museum is located at the Old Castel in the eastern area of Oman in
Wilayt Al Kamil Wa Al wafi overlooking the famous Al Kamil market and
the heritage old houses. The Castel was built in the last quarter of the
seventeenth century while the museum was established in 2012 after the
completion of the castle restoration. One of the freshest Falajs in Oman,
Falaj Al- Kamil, passes inside this ancient Castle which Wilayt Al-Kamil is
named after.
The Museum displays to visitors more than ten thousand of assorted old and heritage pieces dating back to centuries of time. It has more
than 1400 pieces of old ceramic and more than 700 piece of old
copper, metals, old tools, electronics and old machineries. Additionally, it
displays palm leaves craft works, traditional wooden boxes, and various
potteries.

The Al Saleel National Park is a wildlife reserve in the Sharqiyah region
of Oman.
The park extends over an area of 220 square kilometres (85 sq mi), and is
predominantly covered by forests of acacia trees. It is home to a number of
rare species such as the Arabian gazelle, the Omani wild cat (“Al Senmar”)
(Felis silvestris gordoni) and other animals which have made this
environment their home, including the red fox, the Egyptian eagle (Neophron
percnopterus) and others.

JAMI AL HAMODA MOSQUE

This aged and revered mosque is difficult but rewarding to find. The low-lying prayer hall is unique due to its profusion of 52 domes. Non-Muslims
aren't permitted to enter, but it's possible to gain a vantage point across the
mosque roof from the neighbouring buildings. A falaj (irrigation channel)
used for ablutions runs through the courtyard and goats assemble in the
shady lanes nearby. Getting to the mosque is half the fun as the road rides
the fault line between settlement and sand.

AL SUWAIH ARCHAELOGICAL SPOT

Bidiya
Bidiya or Bidiyyah (Arabic: ـةَّديِـِ
ب (is a town in Wilayah
Bidiyyah (Arabic: بـديـة واليـة, Province of Bidiyyah), in the middle of
the Eastern Region of the Sultanate of Oman. It is located about 233
kilometres (145 miles) from the capital city, Muscat. It comprises fifteen
villages, including Al Muntarib, Al Gabbi, Shahik, Al Rakah, Al Hawiyah, Al
Shariq, Al Wasil and Al Dhahir.
It is well known for the golden sand dunes that attract tourists from Oman
and outside Oman. There are some ancient forts spread over Bidiyah,
including the Al Muntarib Fort which was renowned by the Ministry of
Culture.

Time ACTIVITY
6:00 AM DEPARTURE
7:00 AM – 7:00 AM(following day)  Go around swimming and camping at
Masirah Island
8:00 AM  Back to the hotel

MASIRAH ISLAND

Masirah Island, also referred to as Mazeira Island and Wilāyat Maṣīrah, is
an island off the east coast of mainland Oman in the Arabian Sea, and the
largest island of the country.
The ocean bottom environment surrounding Masirah is hostile as
the majority of the area is covered in either sand or hard rock.
There is a swift current flowing through the area with a very
sharp halocline visible on the surface of the ocean. The water depth nearby
is around 10 m and is not conducive to side-scan sonar searches due to
the shallow water and choppy surface conditions. Despite the poor-quality
ocean bottom, the area is very productive with marine fisheries, and any
hard objects (barrels, engines) are immediately colonized by local fauna.
During summer there is normally a constant strong wind which is ideal for
kite and windsurfers. Big waves are a result of the wind on the sea side and
is so also attractive for wave surfers. Kite and windsurfers can pick spots
around the island according to their skill and what conditions they prefer.
The British established a military presence on Masirah in the 1930s. A
small stone building, a fuel store for land-based aircraft flying between
Aden and Muscat, stood at the midpoint of the island on the west side, and
had a stone above the door inscribed "RAF 1936". Reputedly, the fuel store
was locked and visiting aircrew used to bring a key, refuel from cans, lock
the store and fly onwards.
A dispute between British forces and the local inhabitants took place in
1942, led by one of two local sheikhs, who were eventually forced to flee
the island.
During WW II, The British paid the Sultan of Muscat a stipend of £18,000
per annum for affording British forces 'necessary facilities', which included
Masirah. A Cabinet Office memorandum of 1945 recommended the
acquisition of Masirah on a 99-year lease, US interests in the island
notwithstanding (During World War II the United States also had a base on
the island.). The Sultan was to be offered an annual payment of £3,750
with an initial premium of £7,500. The base continued to expand into the
1970s, supporting British and Oman forces fighting insurgents during
the Dhofar Rebellion and providing transit facilities for long-distance RAF
flights.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
